Work begins on new liquid bulk storage at Khalifa Port
AD Ports Group and Nimex Terminals recently marked the groundbreaking of the UAE’s first private-sector Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) terminal at Khalifa Port. The new facility is being developed to accommodate large, long-haul gas carriers and will deliver large scale refrigerated storage and marine handling infrastructure for propane, butane and LPG mix products.
The development will further strengthen the UAE’s role in facilitating global LPG flows between major production centres and high growth demand markets across Asia, Africa and Europe. It will also expand Khalifa Port’s capabilities to meet the evolving demands of international energy trade.
Phase 1 of the development, which is expected to be commissioned within 36 months from the commencement of construction, will comprise two full‑containment refrigerated storage tanks of 50,000m3 and 67,000 m3 for propane and butane respectively, together with four LPG bullet tanks with an aggregate capacity of 21,000 m3 for mixed LPG products. A similar expansion is planned under Phase 2, bringing total terminal capacity to approximately 280,000 m3.
The project also includes the construction of dedicated LPG jetties with a 16m water depth, enabling large LPG carriers to be accommodated here.
Additionally, in the past few days Oylz Terminals has also held a groundbreaking ceremony at Khalifa Port to mark the start of construction of a new petroleum products storage terminal. The facility is intended to provide storage and handling infrastructure for refined petroleum products, with an initial capacity of 154,500 m3. The terminal will handle a wide range of products including gasoline, gas oil (diesel), naphtha and bunker fuels. As part of the development, a new dedicated berth with a 16m depth is being established to accommodate larger tankers calling at the port.
Salman Wisal, Chief Executive Officer of Oylz Terminals, said: “This milestone marks the shift from planning to delivery. At Khalifa Port, we are developing a refined products storage terminal designed to international standards, starting with Phase 1, and built with a clear pathway to expand to 660,000m3 over time.”
