GAC Oman and the Port of Salalah have begun working together to ship Less than Container (LCL) import consignments through the port. With this new service, the Port of Salalah says it will offer GAC and the wider Omani business community the opportunity to take advantage of Salalah’s extensive shipping line services to enjoy faster transit times and greater schedule reliability which, in turn, will lead to significant savings in logistics costs.
According to Daniel Nordberg, general manager of GAC Oman, “The excellent connectivity and the comprehensive facilities offered by the port have led to Salalah becoming an important part of the supply chain and logistics solutions offered by GAC to its customers in Oman” He also praised the Royal Oman Police Customs team in Salalah for its “excellent ongoing support to make this possible.”
Salalah port believes the local business community is coming to realise that the savings offered by the fact that the port has so many service connections, allowing them to get goods to market quicker, more than offset higher inland haulage costs. David Gledhill, chief executive officer of the Port of Salalah said the concept had been already well received by the business community and promised to work with the various stakeholders to identify and develop LCL opportunities.
In a separate development Salalah has purchased a series of eight Moor Master units from Cavotec. These will allow containerships to be berthed without traditional mooring lines, improving efficiency and safety, especially during difficult weather conditions.
