The emerging Omani Port of Duqm continues to expand its operational capabilities. Demonstrating a commitment to cater for an ever-wide range of cargo types, the port recently handled its first ro-ro operation for Duqm Refinery Project EPC3.
In fact, PDC used both ro-ro (roll-on, roll-off) and lo-lo (lift on, lift off) techniques to handle cargo transported on the multi-purpose ro-ro vessel, Bahri Tabuk. In this particular operation the Port of Duqm discharged 4336 tonnes of steel cargoes, with 13 ro-ro MAFI trailers offloading 639 tonnes of the total. The remaining 3697 tonnes of cargo was handled in lo-lo mode.
Reggy Vermeulen, general manager of the Port of Duqm, said: “This is a major milestone for the port in its early operational phase. We are endeavouring to be the preferred port for such ro-ro operations, not only for the Duqm Refinery Project, but also for other upcoming projects in the region.”
