PSA Mumbai inaugurates Phase 2 of development project
With the inauguration of its Phase 2 expansion, PSA Mumbai is set to become India’s largest container terminal. The major development doubles the terminal’s annual container handling capacity to 4.8 million TEUs and adds 1,000 m of new berth length, creating a continuous 2,000 m quay capable of berthing several large containerships simultaneously. The expansion also includes the installation of 12 additional quay cranes, bringing the total to 24, along with a 200 hectare land reclamation that provides expanded yard space and multimodal infrastructure.
The upgraded terminal features six Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC)-compatible rail tracks with direct connectivity to the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor. This links PSA Mumbai to a nationwide network of 63 Inland Container Depots, strengthening its role as a significant logistics hub for India’s growing trade volumes.
PSA Mumbai is powered entirely by renewable energy sources, including solar and wind, showcasing how large-scale port operations can significantly reduce their carbon footprint and align with global sustainability goals.
The terminal represents US$1.3 billion of investment from Singapore-based PSA International, making it the largest foreign direct investment from Singapore in India to date. The official inauguration of Phase 2 took place on 4th September 2025, with speeches delivered virtually from New Delhi by the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, and the Prime Minister of Singapore, Lawrence Wong. A commemorative foundation stone was then virtually unveiled to mark the official opening of PSA Mumbai’s new berths for container handling operations.
