India launches onboard training for aspiring seafarers
In what is considered to be a significant step towards strengthening India‘s maritime workforce and addressing the challenge faced by pre-sea trained young people awaiting mandatory onboard training, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has launched a six-month structured onboard training programme for General Purpose (GP) Rating and Certificate Course in Maritime Catering (CCMC) trainees. The training is being conducted onboard Swaraj Dweep, a passenger vessel owned by the Andaman & Nicobar Administration and managed by The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI).
The initiative, which got underway on July 15th this year, is being implemented by SCI in collaboration with the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA), under the guidance of MoPSW, with financial support from the Maritime Training Trust (MTT). SCI is responsible for the planning, execution, administration and monitoring of the programme to ensure its effective implementation.
By providing structured onboard training to eligible GP Rating and CCMC trainees, the Ministry seeks to bridge a critical gap between pre-sea training and employment, thereby significantly enhancing the employability of aspiring Indian seafarers. The initiative will strengthen India’s pool of skilled maritime professionals while creating greater employment opportunities in both the domestic and global shipping industry.
