Sohar Port and Freezone has revealed exceptional throughput figures for 2014 at a recent press conference held at the Chedi Hotel in Muscat. Chief executive AndreToet highlighted the fact that the port’s container throughput grew by a massive 58 per cent in 2014, with cars and breakbulk traffic also performing well.
The rise in container traffic is attributed mainly to the relocation of commercial traffic from Muscat to Sohar, which has benefitted the Oman International Container Terminal in the port. Breakbulk cargo increased by 51 per cent compared to 2013, while the number of cars handled by Sohar jumped 99 per cent, to 122,000 units. Mr Toet, said the car handling business is expected to grow to 200,000 vehicles in 2015 as a result of agreements that have been reached to make the port a regional hub for vehicle traffic.
It has also recently been announced that Centre Point Logistics has reached a deal with Sohar Port and Freezone that will see the Dubai-based company manage a 50,000 m2 site in the free zone, which will be used to target logistics opportunities in Oman and also in the Saudi Arabian market.
Centre Point Logistics currently operates from several locations in the UAE. Its Logistics Hub in Jebel Al Free Zone occupies over 200,000 m2, and provides various value-added services to the logistics and supply chain sector. The company plans to have its Oman Logistics Hub ready in the first half of 2015.
