The Port of Salalah in Oman celebrates its 25th anniversary this month, and it is perhaps a fitting moment to acknowledge the progress that has been made over that time. In terms of volume growth, the port has recently witnessed a significant surge in general cargo volumes, recording a substantial 26 % increase in traffic over the first half of this year. This impressive performance positions the port on track to break its cargo throughput record for the full year.
In extending his congratulations to the team, Keld Mosgaard Christensen, CEO of the Port of Salalah, singled out training and development as key contributors to the port’s success. He said, “We strongly believe that employee development is crucial for the overall success of our organisation.” He noted that the port has recently launched its Tamkeen Talent Development Programme, aimed at nurturing talent within the company, particularly in leadership roles, including customer service.
A facility that is 30% owned and managed by APM Terminals, Salalah holds a pivotal position due to its strategic location along the major East-West shipping lanes. The port is highly regarded for providing good access to key regions, including the Middle East, the Indian Subcontinent and East Africa.
The port has seven berths capable of accommodating vessels with drafts of up to 18 m, and a general cargo terminal featuring 12 berths that can handle drafts of up to 16 m. As well as the largest container vessels, the port can handle bulk shipments, bunkering operations and warehousing services.
