Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), one of India’s leading port infrastructure developers, has signed a long term agreement with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) to provide Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) regasification services at its new LNG import terminal at Dhamra port, in Odisha. IOC has booked 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of regasification capacity spread over 20 years, and plans to supply the gas to its refineries in Paradip in Odisha and Haldia in West Bengal.
Adani Ports believes its investment will help meet a lack of adequate LNG import infrastructure in India and that the project will help increase gas consumption in this part of the country. In addition it is well placed to serve markets in Bangladesh and Myanmar as well, the company points out.
Construction of the new terminal is now well underway, having commenced in July last year, and is expected to be commissioned during the second half of 2021. The new Dhamra LNG import terminal is designed for an initial capacity of 5 million tonnes annually, which can be further expanded up to 10 million tonnes a year. To begin with, it will have two full containment type tanks of 180,000 m3 capacity each and will be served by a jetty capable of handling a wide range of LNG carriers, up to Q-Max size. The facility will also have truck loading gantries to help increase the LNG by truck delivery market which Adani believes has exciting opportunities for growth.
