Elcome Secures Large-Scale Tanker Retrofit Contract
Dubai-headquartered Elcome International has signed a large-scale agreement with a Middle East-based shipowner to retrofit boiler control systems across a fleet of ten crude oil tankers and product carriers.
The contract, one of Elcomeās most comprehensive retrofit programmes to date, is designed to improve long-term boiler reliability while ensuring readiness for future digital upgrades. It follows recurring operational challenges linked to ageing equipment and the lack of available spare parts.
The project covers the supply and installation of new ELSYS Boiler Control systems to replace Alfa Laval Mission/ALTS Boiler control systems for auxiliary and composite boilers on each vessel. The original Mission systems, delivered in 2012 and based on UNISAB II controllers, had reached the end of their lifecycle, with frequent failures and discontinued components.
Elcomeās scope includes modern PLC-based control systems for Alfa Laval OL/OC boilers, updated human-machine interfaces (HMIs), and a new burner management system. Each installation also incorporates secure remote connectivity, enabling Elcomeās service teams to deliver real-time diagnostics, software updates and technical support during voyages. This digital capability highlights the increasing importance of condition monitoring in driving performance, reducing downtime and ensuring faster intervention.
Two tankers have already been successfully retrofitted ā one in Jebel Ali and one completed while the vessel was sailing, without disruption to charter operations. Each retrofit takes between five and seven days to complete. Early performance data from the first two installations has already demonstrated reduced alarms, longer mean time to failure and more stable boiler operations, confirming the effectiveness of the upgrade programme.
