Colombo Dockyard wins new cable layer contract
Colombo Dockyard has signed a contract with Global Marine Systems Limited of the UK to build a 1800 dwt cable laying and repair vessel, further building on its established presence in this specialist sector. The BV-classed vessel has been designed by Vard Design and an optimised hull form and bow shape developed by the Norwegian naval architects has been incorporated in the design, enabling the vessel to achieve high speeds and minimise its carbon footprint.
The vessel, whose primary role will be to carry out cable operations, including laying, repair and Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) inspection, will be 100m in length with a beam of 18.8m and a depth of 7.15m. Capable of a speed of 14.5 knots it will have accommodation facilities for 76 persons and three cable tanks to carry fibre optic cables.
In 2019, Colombo Dockyard built and delivered a 113m cable layer, KDDI Cable Infinity, to a customer in Japan and in 2023 built and delivered a 100m cable laying and repair vessel, Sophie Germain, to a client in France. Following completion of these projects, the yard was awarded further shipbuilding contracts to build two more cable laying and repair vessels for France, which are currently under construction and scheduled to be delivered in March 2028 and January 2029 respectively. The latest vessel for Global Marine is expected be delivered in September 2029.
