Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC) has officially taken delivery of its latest newbuilding, the 110,000-dwt LR2 tanker Al Dasma, increasing the size of the company’s fleet to 26 vessels. Another four vessels are expected to be delivered before the end of 2014, taking the number of vessels owned and opted by KOTC to 30. The 250m long, Aframax class Al Dasma was built at the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) yard in South Korea, to ClassNK classification standards.
All of KOTC’s new tankers are environmentally-friendly and are equipped to reduce SOx, NOx, and CO2 emissions, as well as to treat ballast water.
KOTC has also designed the new tankers to be secure against piracy attacks, and they come fitted with Long Range Acoustic Device technology, high pressure water sprinklers, and barriers to prevent pirates getting access to the tanker, including specially designed ladders. In addition, monitoring tools onboard allow the crew to scan their surroundings and record data, even in dark environments.
KOTC is now working on a further, Phase IV fleet expansion, which is due to get underway towards the end of this year. The company is currently pre-qualifying shipyards able to design and build two very large gas carriers, as a replacement for two older vessels that will be over 25 years of age by 2018.
