Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC) has completed the installation of a high-speed internet service on all the tankers in its fleet. The company has signed a contract with Marlink to equip its ships with VSAT technology.
According to Bader Al-Otaibi, director of KOTC’s fleet engineering group, the investment in high speed internet will improve operational efficiency and significantly reduce operating expenses relating to communications. Furthermore it will enhance the level of security and safety of the fleet and improve the welfare of crew members who sail onboard the tankers for many weeks at a time
KOTC currently has an owned fleet of 30 tankers, including VLCCs, product tankers and gas carriers. The average age of the fleet is about 7 years.
“Marlink’s experience in large-scale VSAT installation projects has supported us to upgrade our on board communication facilities quickly and efficiently,” says Mr. Otaibi. “All vessels are now fully operational on the VSAT network with a positive effect on our business critical communications, in addition to being able to provide crew with enhanced facilities to access the internet and stay in touch with friends and family.”
Marlink’s VSAT solution for KOTC vessels features three Virtual Local Area Networks (VLAN), unlimited L-band backup and automatic switching between carriers. Bandwidth provided is in the range of Committed Information Rate (CIR) 128/128kbs to 512/512kbps, with temporary upgrades up to CIR 1Mbps also available on request, for bandwidth-heavy applications such as video conferencing.
