India’s JN Port has become the first port in the country to implement the tagging of containers, to help importers and exporters track goods in transit. The new Logistics Data Bank (LDB) service will track containers on a near real¬ time basis using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, while containers are being transported by rail and on trucks on major highways, through the portal www.ldb.co.in.
An RFID tag will be attached to each container, which will be tracked through RFID readers installed at various locations. According to JN Port Trust, the service will integrate the information available from various agencies across the supply chain to provide detailed real time information within a single window. The LDB service coverage is expected to be increased steadily, following the departure of the first tagged container on 11th July
JN Port Trust believes the tagging programme will lower the transaction costs incurred by shippers and consignees and is one of the most important ‘Ease of Doing Business’ initiatives implemented at JN Port. It is aimed at reducing the need for documentation, as well as achieving time and cost reductions, to the benefit of trade.
A joint venture between the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (DMICDC) and NEC Corporation, Japan, called DMICDC Logistics Data Services Limited (DLDSL) has been created to provide the LDB service.
