At a formal event, presided over by Union Minister for Shipping, Shri Nitin Gadkari, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with UK ports operator, Peel Ports, which owns the Port of Liverpool. The agreement, the first association of its type between ports in the two countries, was signed by Shri Neeraj Bansal, the chairman of JNPT, with Peel Ports’ chief executive, Mark Whitworth.
Under the LoI, JNPT and Peel Ports have agreed to foster the exchange of information and expertise in port operations, port management and hinterland connections. They will also develop a series of modules in the education and training of port operators, IT systems, traffic and trade between Liverpool and Mumbai.
Shri Nitin Gadkari said: “This strategic alliance between these two major ports will drive more efficient movement of goods and will build on our common objective of establishing optimal port performance.”
Jawaharlal Nehru Port, handles about 40% of the country’s container traffic and has been working close to its full capacity for the last 6 years. Two new projects, a fourth container terminal and a stand-alone container handling berth of 330m in length, are under development.
There are now plans to build a satellite port at Dahanu Taluka, off Vadhawan Point. JNPT will have an equity share of 74% and the Government of Maharashtra a stake of 26% in the new port company. It is expected that the new port will adopt the landlord port model, with basic port infrastructure being developed by the port company and the berths, terminals and associated facilities being developed with private participation.
