Abu Dhabi Ports (ADP) has joined forces with the Australian Maritime College (AMC) to deliver certified coastal seafaring courses in Abu Dhabi, the first of their type in the region. This reflects the emirate of Abu Dhabi’s aim of developing a capable workforce, and equipping seafarers with the specialised knowledge and professional skills to enhance service and performance levels.
Launched last month, the coastal seafaring programme represents AMC’s first overseas vocational education and training (VET) course, and 16 students, 12 men and 4 women, have joined the initial training programme in Abu Dhabi. If successful they will be qualified to work as a Master on a commercial vessel up to 35 m in length within the coastal waters in UAE. As well as being the first time such courses will be conducted in the region, it marks the first time that UAE national females have chosen seafaring as a career.
Commenting on the collaboration, Captain Mohamad Juma Al Shamisi, chief executive of Abu Dhabi Ports, said: “Being a graduate myself from the Australian Maritime College, I can assure all seafaring enthusiasts in the UAE that this training programme represents a great learning opportunity to acquire in-depth understanding of the maritime business and related activities.”
