While container volumes dipped in the first quarter of 2021 at Salalah port, its general cargo terminal experienced a healthy increase, with the 4.34 million tons moved up from 4.35 million tons in the first three months of 2020.
Key commodities handled at the General Cargo Terminal in the port include limestone, gypsum, and cement which are exported from Salalah to regional markets.
Container throughput over the quarter was 1.09 million TEU, 6% down on the 1.17 million TEU recorded last year. However Salalah says it has retained all its major customers and that Maersk, its biggest business partner, has maintained consistent volumes.
The port says that demand for dry bulk goods remains strong. But it warns that the Indian market could be adversely affected in the second quarter if there are further lockdowns.
