Oman’s Salalah Port, part of the Asyad group, enjoyed a strong performance at its general cargo terminal in 2023. Overall, the facility handled 21.38 million tonnes of cargo, up from 18.39 million tonnes in 2022, a rise of 16.26%. Dry bulk volumes rose from 14.06 million tonnes to 17.4 million tonnes, an increase of 22.88 %, while break bulk cargo volumes jumped from 1.66 million tonnes in 2022, to 2.17 million tonnes last year, an increase of 30.72%. Liquids volumes however were down from 2.67 million tonnes in 2022 to 1.79 million tonnes in 2023, a dip of over 33%.
The uncertain global market for container shipping is reflected in less positive figures for the container terminal, operated by Salalah Port Services. Whereas in 2022, total throughput was 4.5 million TEU, during 2023 the terminal handled only 3.79 million TEU, with transhipment activity in particular declining sharply, from 3.94 million TEU to 3.3 million TEU last year. The volume of imports and exports, however, remained steady at 125,585 TEU and 153, 629 TEU respectively, similar to 2022 figures.
Asyad manages a number of interconnected ports, including Sohar and Duqm, as well as Salalah, within Oman. Sohar recently commemorated 20 years of operation as the primary gateway for the country’s imports and exports, and now contributes 2.1% of the country’s GDP, as well as handling around 80% of the country’s trade. At Duqm, the newly-operational Asyad Container Terminal has three berths, a quay stretching over 1000 m, a design throughput capacity of over 1 million TEU and stacking space for more than 600 reefer containers.
