Echandia to deliver battery system for India’s first electric tug
Swedish energy storage specialist Echandia has been selected to supply the battery system for India’s first fully electric tugboat, to be deployed at Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla as part of the Government of India’s Green Tug Transition Program. The tug will be equipped with a 4.4 MWh Echandia battery system enabling zero-emission operations within the port.
The battery system is designed for a 15-year lifetime to match the full operational agreement between Ripley Group and the port authority. Following Ripley’s award of the charter tender, Kongsberg Maritime was appointed as system integrator and Echandia was subsequently selected through a competitive tender to supply the battery technology.
A key requirement was the ability to deliver 30,000 charge cycles over 15 years without mid-life battery replacement, which Echandia says it was uniquely able to guarantee.
The fully electric tug is the first of a wider programme that will include 16 vessels by 2027, with around 150 new electric tugs planned thereafter and a long-term target of 400 vessels by 2040.
Echandia already has a strong presence in India, including battery deliveries for water buses in Kochi and the Varanasi ferry system. “As an early leader in India’s maritime electrification, Echandia is proud to play a role in accelerating the decarbonisation of ports and inland waterways, and to collaborate with the nation’s shipbuilders as they expand internationally”, says Rakshith Sachitanand, Senior Strategist at Echandia.
