It has been confirmed that the Emirates International Maritime Academy (EIMA) will collaborate with the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) to look at ways of improving training for the UAE’s future maritime engineers and seafarers. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was recently signed by His Excellency Khamis Juma Buamim, chairman of Drydocks World and Maritime World and chairman of EIMA, and Dr Tayeb Kamali, vice chancellor of HCT.
EIMA is an emerging maritime educational and training provider which aims to become a regional centre of excellence for maritime education in the Gulf. The HCT is the UAE’s largest higher education institution with 20,000 male and female students attending 17 campuses throughout the Emirates. Under the terms of the MoU, the parties will work together to develop a program of academic cooperation and training in the maritime field, including courses for seafarers, maritime engineers and naval architects.
The intention is that EIMA will provide HCT students studying seafaring with a range of industry-relevant and accredited short courses, including for example courses in STCW, SOLAS and IMO-related topics. In addition, it is proposed that HCT students will have access to EIMA facilities for work experience, as well as Drydocks World Dubai which will provide technical training facilities and the opportunity to gain experience at its shipyard.
According to Khamis Juma Buamim, ”This is a landmark association between two great organisations of the UAE which represent the embodiment of the vision of our wise leadership. We, as the largest maritime service facility in the region, are delighted to have arrived at this MoU with HCT, which is a leading education provider in the country with a prime focus on local national development.’’
He said he expected the agreement to be the basis on which to provide a firm foundation for giving good maritime education and training to students who wish to be a part of the rapidly growing maritime, oil, gas, energy and offshore sectors. “We aim to promote academic cooperation, share best practice, promote technological and academic research and provide career choices for students and young academics from the UAE and regionally,” His Excellency added.
