DP World Begins Operations at Syria’s Tartus Port
DP World has commenced operations at the Port of Tartus in Syria, following the signing of a 30-year concession agreement that includes a planned $800 million investment in Syria’s maritime infrastructure. One of the first outcomes of the redevelopment programme is the arrival of the newly acquired 22m harbour tug, Al Fath, featuring a 50-tonne bollard pull rating to enhance port operations.
DP World is currently conducting a comprehensive assessment of Tartus Port’s existing infrastructure and equipment, including the quay, yard, and warehouse areas. This initial phase involves technical surveys, operational studies and design planning to create a detailed redevelopment roadmap aimed at transforming the port into a world-class facility.
In the short term, DP World Tartus will focus on dredging port access channels, basins, and berths to achieve optimal design depths. Rehabilitation and replacement of existing handling equipment, combined with the introduction of new specialised assets, will support the port’s ability to handle increasing volumes of bulk and breakbulk cargo efficiently. DP World will also implement its proprietary digital platforms to enhance operational efficiency, transparency, and customer service.
In the medium term, the Tartus Port redevelopment programme will include significant upgrades to port infrastructure and superstructure, expansion of handling and storage capacity, and new investments in bulk handling systems. Plans also include the introduction of advanced containerised and non-containerised facilities to meet growing trade demands in the region.
These strategic initiatives aim to position Tartus Port as a vital maritime and logistics hub in the Eastern Mediterranean, strengthening regional and international trade routes and contributing to Syria’s long-term reconstruction and economic recovery.
Fahad Al Banna has been appointed CEO of DP World Tartus, bringing extensive experience from his previous role as Senior Vice President, Container Operations, at Jebel Ali Port. Reflecting on his appointment, he said: “It is an honour to take on this responsibility at such an important moment in Syria’s history. We are grateful to the Syrian Port Authority for their support and collaboration throughout this time and confident that the redevelopment of Tartus Port will contribute to the country’s economic revival, support jobs and strengthen the flow of trade across the region.”
