Colombo Dockyard completes cable layer retrofit project
Colombo Dockyard recently completed repair and retrofit work on the cable-laying vessel Ile D’Aix, owned by Alcatel Submarine Networks and managed by LD Armateurs of France.
The project builds on Colombo Dockyard’s growing expertise with cable-laying vessels, following earlier work on Ile de Brehat, Ile de Re and Teneo, as well as the construction of cable layers for customers in Japan and France.
The primary focus of this latest project was the retrofitting of the vessel’s main propulsion and bow thruster units. The work involved detailed engineering carried out by Colombo Dockyard’s in-house design team, followed by the removal of existing equipment and installation of new thrusters and systems across multiple compartments, including the thruster, switchboard, engine control and transformer rooms and the wheelhouse.
According to company spokesperson Darshana, “The successful completion of this project demonstrated our ability to execute complex retrofit programmes on specialised vessels, through effective planning, in-house engineering expertise and close coordination with stakeholders.”
In another notable milestone, Colombo Dockyard recently docked five vessels simultaneously in Dock 4, which measures 263m x 44m. These included the anchor handling tug supply vessel Greatship Vidya, the tanker DSG from the UAE, the fishing trawler Fu Yuan Yu from China, and the tug Mutha Gem and the barge Mutha Emerald from India.
Handling multiple vessels in a single dock highlights the yard’s operational flexibility in accommodating different vessel types within the same drydock space.
