India’s leading shipyard, Cochin Shipyard Limited, has secured a significant order with a European client for the construction of two hybrid Service Operation Vessels (SOVs) for the offshore wind renewables market, with an option for one more. These SOVs are designed by Vard, Norway and built for the service, maintenance and operational needs of the offshore wind industry.
The vessels are equipped with a fully electric cycloidal propulsion system, a motion compensated gangway system and a crane. Classed by DNV with its ‘Clean Design’ and ‘Cyber Secure’ notations, the vessels will feature a hybrid electric propulsion system, powered by three 1300 kW diesel generator sets and a large lithium battery pack, to reduce emissions.
This is not the only international contract that the yard is working on at present. The construction of a series of eight multi-purpose vessels for a German client is also progressing well, the company states.
Cochin Shipyard has also recently opened a new ship repair facility, on 42 acres of land, which is equipped with a 6000 ton shiplift and transfer system suitable for handling vessels up to 130 m in length. Capable of the simultaneous repair of six vessels, it is expected to cater for the needs of both locally based and international vessels calling at Indian ports that require repair and maintenance support.
