Cochin Shipyard and KSOE Sign Strategic Shipbuilding Pact
Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), one of India’s leading shipbuilding and ship repair companies, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), a key player in the global shipbuilding sector, which manages the operations of some of the world’s largest shipyards, including Hyundai Heavy Industries, Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries.
The long-term cooperation agreement, which is aimed at enhancing CSL’s shipbuilding capabilities, spans several key areas. This includes the joint exploration of newbuilding opportunities in India and abroad; the sharing of technical expertise in shipbuilding; the identification of initiatives to enhance productivity and capacity utilisation; joint efforts to upskill and strengthen workforce capabilities; and the exploration of potential collaboration in other shipbuilding-related projects.
A CSL spokesperson commented: “The signing of this MoU is a significant step toward strengthening India’s shipbuilding ecosystem through global collaboration and knowledge exchange, enhancing self-reliance and competitiveness in the maritime sector.”
Additionally, CSL has recently secured an order for two 70-tonne harbour tugs from Polestar Maritime. The vessels, designed by Robert Allan, follow a contract for three similar tugs signed earlier this year with Udupi Cochin Shipyard Ltd (Udupi-CSL), a CSL subsidiary. All of the tugs will be co-constructed at CSL’s Cochin yard under a work-share agreement with Udupi-CSL.
