This January Boluda Towage commenced towage operations in the Egyptian port of Abu Qir’s container terminal with three powerful new tugs. Two tugs, VB Amon and VB Horus, handled the container vessel Zhong Gu Ji Lin, assisting it to berth at the terminal, followed by a second containership, Mao Gang Shang Hai, a few days later, marking the start-up of the harbour towage contract. The third tug that has been deployed by Boluda at Abu Qir is the VB Ahmose. All three have 75 tonnes bollard pull and firefighting capabilities.
Vicente Boluda Fos, President of Boluda Corporación Marítima, stated: “Abu Qir is a port in full motion, and the port’s development fits perfectly with the ambitions of the Boluda Towage Division. Our presence in Egypt and the Middle East is a further step towards strengthening and expanding our global activities.”
The company’s towage operations in Egypt will be supported by a dedicated team onshore, based in an office in Abu Qir. The new tugs are all Turkish-built newbuildings, with VB Amon and VB Horus delivered by Sanmar Shipyards, and the VB Ahmose from Med Marine Shipyards. All of the three tugs provide an impressive pulling capacity, allowing them to handle large vessel types, while their versatility enables them to perform a variety of functions, including towing, pushing, mooring, escort, firefighting operations and terminal support work.
