UAE heavyweight unveils further investment in Egyptian port sector
One of the leading players in the UAE ports and logistics sector, AD Ports Group, has stepped up its already substantial investment in the Egyptian port sector with a series of significant initiatives announced in recent weeks. The Group has revealed plans to make a cash offer to acquire an additional stake in Alexandria Container & Cargo Handling Company (ALCN), a move that would give AD Ports Group majority ownership and operational control of one of Egypt’s largest container terminal operators.
ALCN operates major container terminals at Alexandria Port and El-Dekheila Port, two of Egypt’s most important maritime gateways. The acquisition of an increased stake would complement AD Ports Group’s expanding portfolio of port and logistics assets in Egypt while delivering tangible long-term financial returns. The proposed transaction is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2026, subject to the receipt of all required regulatory approvals in Egypt.
ALCN’s terminals at Alexandria and El-Dekheila ports feature a combined quay length of approximately 1.6 km and benefit from direct connectivity to Egypt’s national rail network, enhancing multimodal logistics efficiency. The terminals serve a strong international customer base that includes major global shipping lines such as Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), Evergreen Marine Corporation and Hapag Lloyd AG, reinforcing their strategic importance within the regional container shipping market.
Since 2022, AD Ports Group has made significant investments across Egypt’s maritime and logistics sectors, spanning container shipping, port terminal operations, stevedoring, maritime agency services and cargo handling. In 2027, the Group is scheduled to inaugurate the US$200 million Noatum Ports Safaga terminal, which will be the first internationally operated multipurpose cargo terminal in Upper Egypt. AD Ports Group is also developing cruise terminals at key Red Sea ports including Safaga, Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh. In addition, in 2025 the Group signed a 50-year agreement to develop and operate KEZAD East Port Said, a 20 km² industrial and logistics zone located near the Mediterranean entrance to the Suez Canal.
In a further recent initiative, Noatum Ports, the international ports operating arm of AD Ports Group, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Al Dahra Agriculture – Egypt to explore joint investment and development opportunities linked to the Safaga Terminal. The collaboration focuses on enhancing logistics capabilities such as warehousing and storage, customs clearance services and supply chain digitalisation. This partnership is expected to support more efficient agricultural supply chains, strengthen food security and promote sustainable economic growth in Egypt’s rapidly developing eastern and southern regions, while further embedding AD Ports Group within the country’s strategic logistics ecosystem.
