Oman’s Asyad Group has officially launched the upgraded bulk carrier Sohar Max, now equipped with advanced wind-assisted propulsion technology to significantly improve its environmental efficiency. The vessel features five giant rotor sails—each measuring 35 meters tall and 5 meters in diameter—developed through collaboration with global minerals leader Vale and Anemoi Marine Technologies.
These cutting-edge rotor sails harness wind energy to reduce fuel consumption by up to 6%, contributing to a substantial decrease in carbon emissions by approximately 3,000 tons annually, according to Asyad Group. This innovation supports Oman’s growing leadership in green shipping technology and maritime sustainability across the Middle East shipping industry.
The sails incorporate innovative folding technology developed by Anemoi, allowing horizontal folding during port operations or when passing under low-clearance structures such as bridges, offering high operational flexibility for the bulk carrier.
Dr. Ibrahim bin Bakheet Al Nadhairi, CEO of Asyad Shipping, stated: “Wind propulsion technology is an opportunity to bring about a real revolution in the shipping sector, as it particularly supports sustainability efforts by reducing emissions and improving the operational performance of large vessels.”
