Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT), a vital trade gateway in the Levant region and key player in Middle East maritime logistics, has announced the arrival of a state-of-the-art ship-to-shore (STS) gantry crane valued at US$13 million. This latest addition reinforces ACT’s position as a leading container terminal in Jordan and the wider region.
Adnan El Yacoubi, Chief Operations Officer at Aqaba Container Terminal, described the new STS gantry crane as a “transformative investment” that integrates advanced technology and enhanced operational capabilities. The crane is designed to meet the increasing demands of global container shipping, boosting ACT’s handling capacity while maintaining top-tier safety and efficiency standards.
The new gantry crane is engineered to service the largest container vessels currently in operation. With a quay-trolley height of 56 meters, an outreach of 71 meters, and a lifting capacity of up to 100 tons, the crane features advanced scanning technology to map vessel shapes, minimizing collision risks during container handling. It offers precision positioning, sway reduction during lifts, and predictive maintenance detection. Operated remotely and supported by a comprehensive camera system, the crane will drive productivity improvements through a fully automated workflow.
This crane forms a key element of a broader modernization program at Aqaba Container Terminal, where APM Terminals and the Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC) recently extended their concession agreement until 2046. The initiative targets an increase in terminal capacity by 180,000 TEU annually and enables ACT to accommodate the largest container vessels, up to 400 meters long. These upgrades are set to enhance Jordan’s strategic role in international shipping, logistics, and trade across the Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, and beyond.
