APM Terminals and Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC) have signed a US$ 242 million agreement to expand the Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT), boosting annual capacity to over 1.7 million TEU. Jordanian Prime Minister, Jaafar Hassan, was present at the signing ceremony, underscoring the importance of the project in developing the country’s economic infrastructure.
The partnership reinforces the long-standing collaboration between ADC and APM Terminals, which dates back to 2006. Over the years, this partnership has led to a more than 300% increase in the port’s productivity and the expansion of its quay from 500 m to 1000 m in length. In 2023 ACT had a record high throughput of more than 898,000 TEU, an increase of 5.4 per cent compared to the previous year.
As part of the agreement, APM Terminals has extended the current concession by 15 years, taking it up to 2046. “This renewal marks the next step of our ambitious future plans to upgrade the terminal in Aqaba,” says APM Terminals’ CEO Keith Svendsen.“The extension of the partnership underlines our successful public-private partnership in Jordan, and it will help us expand and develop our relationship even further, exploring the opportunities for creating a green corridor connecting the supply chains of Jordan, while at the same time developing job opportunities and upskilling our employees to the benefit of the Kingdom.”
One the past year, operations at ACT have been improved by opening a new Operations Command Centre and a laser-based Truck Alignment System, which enables truck drivers to position their lorries underneath cranes quickly and accurately. This reduces the time needed to get trucks into place, enabling crane operators to load or discharge faster and more efficiently.
