APM Terminals Signs Bangladesh Port Concession Agreement
Bangladesh has taken a major step toward strengthening its maritime and trade infrastructure with the signing of a concession agreement between the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), APM Terminals and local partner QNS Container Services. The development of the Laldia Container Terminal in Chattogram represents an investment valued at more than US$ 550 million, making it one of the largest Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects in the country’s history and a significant boost for its port logistics network.
The concession agreement will allow APM Terminals to operate the terminal for 30 years, with the possibility of extension based on certain key performance milestones. Once operational in 2030, the deepwater terminal will expand Bangladesh’s annual port handling capacity by more than 800,000 TEU and will enable the Port of Chattogram to handle vessels of up to 6000 TEU, compared with the current limit of 2800 TEU. This increased capacity is expected to reduce congestion, lower logistics costs and support the continued growth of the Bangladesh export sector.
The ambition of the stakeholders is to develop one of South Asia’s most energy-efficient, low emission container terminals. Key features will include electrified cargo handling equipment, solar power installations on terminal structures and shore power-ready systems that allow vessels to plug into the grid. These measures aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, noise and air pollution, delivering long-term benefits for employees, nearby communities and the environment.
