AW Shipping, ADNOC L&S’ joint venture with Wanhua Chemical Group, has awarded a series of shipbuilding contracts to Jiangnan Shipyard in China, for a total of 13 vessels valued at approximately US$1.9 billion (AED 7 billion) overall. The contract includes the construction of nine ethane carriers and two ammonia carriers, with an option for two more.
The new vessels will be among the world’s largest ethane and ammonia carriers and will run on energy-efficient dual fuel engines. The ethane carriers, which will have a carrying capacity of 99,000 m3 each, will be deployed on 20-year time charter contracts and can be powered by either ethane or conventional fuels. This series is due for delivery between 2025 and 2027, making AW Shipping one of the world’s biggest operators of this vessel type. The ammonia carriers, which have a carrying capacity of 93,000 m3 each and can be powered by LPG or conventional fuels, are scheduled for delivery between 2026 and 2028.
Captain Abdulkareem Al Masabi, Chairman of AW Shipping and CEO of ADNOC L&S, said: “This new order reinforces our ongoing fleet expansion and will bolster our ability to transport lower-carbon energy sources and support the energy transition. Importantly, the vessels will generate substantial revenue streams for ADNOC L&S, underscoring our commitment to value-accretive strategic investments as we serve our customers.”
