Jordan’s Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC) and APM Terminals (APMT), are to extend their agreement to operate the container terminal in Aqaba Port for a further 15 years, and to increase investment by US $242 million over this period. A fresh memorandum of understanding was signed by ADC CEO, Hussein Safadi, and Keith Svendsen, CEO of APM Terminals International in September. Among other things the memorandum calls for the establishment of a training college by Maersk International, with the objective of preparing Jordanian youth for employment in regional and international port systems.
The Aqaba Container Port project is the result of a 2006 collaboration between ADC and APMT and two parties are currently looking into a number of new investments and ventures. At a forum the day after the signing the various parties set out their vision for the port to an invited audience.
Svendsen introduced the key aspects of the company’s future vision for the Aqaba port, which include ambitious decarbonisation plans, the modernisation and expansion of ACT, the development of a training centre for individuals working in the maritime and logistics sectors, and ongoing support for Jordan’s goal of becoming an export hub for green energy.
Vijay Rangachari, the Regional Managing Director for Maersk Training, said, “We are eagerly looking forward to the establishment of a Center of Excellence for the logistics and maritime industry, which will play a pivotal role in developing the skills of the sector’s current and future professionals, supporting the growth and advancement for Jordan and across the Levant. Students enrolled in the centre will have the opportunity to be an integral part of Aqaba’s transformation, allowing members of the local community to take a more active role in these exciting changes.”
