The global maritime bulk industry gathered on 16th November for the IBJ Awards 2015, a salute to excellence in the maritime bulk industry, in the newly refurbished ballroom at Antwerp’s Hilton Hotel, with tennis star Kim Clijsters as master of ceremonies. Middle East-based operations were among the winners, with Vale, Oman, being named Best Specialised Dry Bulk Port or Terminal, and Abu Dhabi Ports picking up the People Development Award, in the cargo handling section.
The IBJ Awards recognise achievements in the maritime bulk industry and provide companies with a chance to put themselves in the spotlight or to nominate an organisation which they believe is doing a fantastic job. CMB Chairman Marc Saverys received the Lifetime Achievement award, whilst Personality of the year was R. Raghunath, Director of Global International and former Vice President of Noble Chartering. The Best Dry Bulk Port award went to the Port of Dunkirk and the Bulk Ship Operator of the Year was Fednav.
Accepting the IBJ Awards Lifetime Achievement Award from sponsor Abu Dhabi Ports, CMB chairman, Marc Saverys addressed the assembled crowd of global bulk shipping and cargo handling leaders. In an impassioned speech, he said, “Stop ordering ships. Scrap old ones – send them to the beaches. Make sure you do not give money to Wall Street speculators. Stick to what you are; true ship owners. If true ship owners stand up, if we get rid of those who should not be in our industry, we will survive and we will prevail.” He received a lengthy ovation for his remarks.
