When the heavy lift vessel Svenja discharged its cargo of nine modules last month, it marked the completion of the JSI Alliance’s involvement in the Basrah Refinery upgrade project for JGC Corporation. The Alliance, which comprises Jumbo, SAL and Intermarine, dedicated two vessels to the project, with Jumbo Kinetic joining Svenja, to transport a total of 84 modules between Nantong, in China, and Iraq, using JCG’s specially designed lifting frame.
A number of other vessels from the combined JSI Alliance fleet, including Jumbo Javelin, Fairmaster and Regine, performed supporting roles in the execution of this significant project, undertaking a series of seven voyages, moving equipment including seven, 82 m, 800 tonnes bullet tanks. Overall JSI has transported some 450,000 tonnes of cargo over a period of twelve months.
By pooling its vessels, the Alliance is able to provide a flexible service, whereby it can ensure the availability of a vessel with the required capabilities, while continuing to support other clients. The group says this has proven to be of considerable value during the Basrah project, allowing the Alliance to use the most suitable vessel for each voyage and avoiding interruptions to the workflow.
The South Refineries Company, an energy company operating under the Iraq Ministry of Oil, awarded JGC an EPC contract for the Basrah project. Upon completion, the refinery will help close the gap in supply and demand for petroleum products in the country, reducing import dependency and contributing to job creation and economic development.
