Drydocks World and Maritime World has held the steel cutting ceremony for the Middle East’s first LNG-powered harbour tug, Elemarateyah, marking the start of construction of this ground-breaking vessel.
Due to be completed in May 2016, the new tug will involve close collaboration with Wartsila, which is supplying the main engine, and with Tasneef which will deliver classification services. A spokesman for the yard said: “Drydocks World is proud to collaborate with these local and international companies to position Dubai and the UAE at the forefront of environmentally sustainable projects. As the first in the Middle East to lead the way with the LNG powered tug, Drydocks World looks forward to many future successful project milestones.”
The shipyard also recently held an international agents meeting to discuss the international development of the company. The meeting featured a discussion of growth prospects, the unique dynamics of particular markets, regional competition and regulation.
Despite increasingly strong regional competition, Drydocks World has a strong, regular client base that includes National Drilling Company, Shell International, Saipem, Saudi Aramco, NGSCO/ADNATCO, Shelf Drilling, SBM Offshore, Technip, BP Shipping, Aban Offshore. During the last five years, a total of 502 international customers have used the facility for ship repairs, underlining the importance of the agency network.
