DP World launches shipping link between UAE and Iraq
DP World has launched a new shipping service linking the UAE and Iraq, offering a 36-hour transit time between Dubai’s Mina Rashid port and Iraq’s Umm Qasr ports. The new maritime connection provides a faster and more efficient alternative to overland trucking routes and will be able to accommodate up to 145 accompanied trailers per sailing, strengthening regional trade and logistics connectivity.
The service, which began operations in December, is maintained by the ro-ro ship DP World Express. The 166 m vessel has been redeployed following recent upgrades at Drydocks World and is specifically configured to support high-capacity, time-sensitive cargo movements between the two markets. The vessel will transport non-containerised full trailer units, with drivers travelling on board, delivering a direct, secure and reliable door-to-door logistics solution for customers.
His Excellency Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO, DP World, said: “Our new Dubai-Iraq service will establish a faster and more efficient maritime bridge between Iraq and the UAE to help trade flow across the Middle East. This service gives customers a predictable route that reduces time, cost and complexity and supports long-term economic opportunity on both sides of the corridor.”
In a separate transportation initiative, DP World has also expanded its logistics network in India with the launch of a new export-import (EXIM) rail service connecting Powarkheda in Madhya Pradesh with the Nhava Sheva container terminal in Mumbai. The twice-weekly rail service operates from DP World’s Multimodal Logistics Powarkheda facility and is designed to accelerate cargo movement while lowering logistics costs and reducing emissions.
DP World Powarkheda is equipped with modern warehouses, an inland container yard and a dedicated rail area that enables cargo to be loaded and unloaded directly from trains. The facility also includes a container repair unit to prepare containers for rice and garment cargo, along with dedicated areas for agricultural product processing and manufacturing. In addition, the site features cold storage facilities with temperature-controlled modules, supporting a wide range of cargo types.
Adhendru Jain, Vice President, Rail and Inland Terminals, DP World Subcontinent, said, “Our Powarkheda hub is a game-changer for customers. We currently run twice weekly services to Nhava Sheva and expect to scale up to daily services based on strong customer demand.”
