World’s Largest Car Carrier Makes Maiden Call at Jebel Ali
DP World has welcomed the world’s largest and most environmentally friendly car carrier, Hoegh Sunrise, to Jebel Ali Port for the first time. The pioneering vessel, one of the Aurora class, is the first in the automotive shipping sector capable of operating on future fuels such as ammonia and methanol. With a carrying capacity of 9,100 cars, it is engineered to reduce carbon emissions per car transported by 58% compared to current industry standards.
The vessel made its maiden call at Jebel Ali Port from Europe, arriving with 1,200 vehicles on board. Andreas Enger, CEO of Höegh Autoliners, said, “The Aurora-class is designed to accelerate the transition to sustainable shipping. Partnering with leading hubs like Jebel Ali is essential to deliver on that ambition, ensuring our carbon conscious customers can move their cargo reliably while reducing their carbon footprint.”
Jebel Ali Port has cemented its position as a key automotive logistics hub. DP World handled a record 1.3 million vehicles in Dubai in 2024, a 53.6% increase from the previous year. To meet growing demand, DP World also expanded automotive logistics capacity in August with the launch of a new 2.6 million square foot vehicle storage yard at Terminal 4.
