Tristar Group Launches Region’s First Hybrid Bunkering Barge
The Tristar Group has introduced a biofuel-electric bunkering barge to its fleet, the first of its kind in the region and a major step toward sustainable maritime operations. The vessel is now operational in the Port of Fujairah and has been time-chartered by TotalEnergies Marketing Middle East to support its Lubmarine division’s ship-to-ship operations.
Eugene Mayne, Founder and CEO of Tristar Group, and Thomas Vigneron, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Marketing Middle East, jointly launched the 750m³ Tristar Eco Voyager. The barge features a hybrid engine design combining electric and biofuel power with an advanced powertrain, representing a pioneering approach to cleaner shipping.
The Tristar Eco Voyager’s hybrid propulsion system and innovative technical features support both Tristar’s and TotalEnergies’ sustainability goals. Its engine can operate on a mix of electricity and biofuels, providing operational flexibility while significantly reducing emissions. The barge is expected to achieve approximately 35% lower CO2 emissions compared to conventional vessels. Planned electric charging installations at the Port of Fujairah will allow it to operate almost entirely on electric power while at berth, achieving zero emissions in port operations.
According to the company, “Tristar Eco Voyager exemplifies a practical, immediately deployable solution for the maritime industry’s global push toward low carbon shipping, and improved air quality in busy port areas. As the first vessel of its kind in the UAE and the broader Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, it demonstrates a viable path to decarbonisation and encourages similar investments in greener technologies.”
