The APM Terminals-operated Port of Salalah has completed an investment program valued at around US$ 300 million. The aim of this project has been to increase annual throughput capacity and ensure operational readiness to meet the requirements of the new Gemini consortium between Maersk and Hapag Lloyd, for which it will be one of the primary regional hubs.
The project has included upgrades to all six existing berths at Salalah container terminal and an expansion of the container yard areas, boosting capacity from 4.5 million TEU to 6.5 million TEU a year. APM Terminals has also invested in a new access road, an electrical power substation, electrical network upgrades, and the addition of 2000 reefer container plugs, as well as acquiring ten additional ship-to-shore gantry cranes, with the capability to handle vessels with 26 containers stacked wide on deck. New equipment purchased for the Salalah container terminal also includes 12 hybrid rubber tyred gantry (RTG) cranes, two reach stackers, six empty container handlers and 30 terminal trucks and trailers.
Salalah handled the first call made by the new Gemini arrangement on February 18th this year. Steven Yoogalingam, Port of Salalah Chief Executive Officer, said: “The port call marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the network’s operation, illustrating the strategic importance of Salalah in this global initiative. The enhancements at the Port of Salalah are specifically aligned with the evolving requirements of the Gemini collaboration, ensuring that it remains at the forefront of global shipping operations.”
