
The two top-ranked container ports in the 2021 edition of the Global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) ranking developed by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence and Financial Service, are Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah Port, in first place, followed by the Port of Salalah, Oman in second.
The top ten ports in the CPPI 2021 league tables are dominated by Middle East ports. Aside from King Abdullah Port and Salalah, Hadad port in Qatar, Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia are all listed as being in the world top ten most efficient ports according to both methodologies used by the authors.
King Abdullah Port was ranked second in both approaches in the last survey, CPPI 2020, while Port of Salalah ranked sixth and ninth in the statistical and administrative approaches, respectively, last time.

The Port of Colombo was ranked as the most efficient port in South Asia and the Indian Sub-Continent and 22nd overall in CPPI 2021.Welcoming the news, the port authority pointed out that Port of Colombo will continue to develop ahead of projected demand and, towards this, construction has already begun on two new deep water terminals, the East Container Terminal (ECT) by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and the West Container Terminal (WCT), by a consortium led by Adani Ports and including John Keells Holdings. These developments will progressively add over 7 million TEU of throughput capacity over the next 2-5 years.
The Port of Colombo recorded an all-time high throughput of 7.25 million TEU in 2021 and achieved year on year growth of 2% for the first 5 months of 2022 ending in May.
