Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), one of India’s leading container ports, handled 2.7 million TEU during the first half of the 2021-22 financial year, compared with 1.93 million TEU in the equivalent period of the previous year, a rise of more than 40%. Encouragingly for its environmental objectives, the port’s container rail traffic accounted for more than 18 % of the total, continuing the switch from road to rail mode.
There are signs of a gradual slowdown from these very high figures, which reflect a recovery from a low ebb during the pandemic. The total volume of container traffic handled in September 2021 stood at just over 452,000 TEU, almost 19% up on the same month of last year.
During the first half of the year the Nhava Sheva International Gateway Terminal (NSIGT) facility handled around 1.1 million TEU, its highest monthly throughput since its inception. It thereby maintained its leading position within the port.
Recent initiatives at JNPT including the launch of a ‘dwarf’ container train service, using smaller containers that are double stacked for inland movements. JNPT has also installed two mobile x- ray scanners at the NSICT and APMT terminals to give security agencies the chance to take appropriate action before a container is allowed to exit and improve operational efficiency.
