Crown LNG, a Norwegian group which specialises in developing LNG infrastructure for harsh weather conditions, is starting development of a new LNG terminal offshore Kakinada, India. The company has signed an agreement with East LNG to finance, build and lease the infrastructure for the offshore LNG receiving terminal at Kakinada. Crown has also been contracted to operate and manage the facility throughout the 25-year lease period.
Crown’s new LNG terminal will be built with an annual re-gasification capacity of 7.2 million tonnes per year and will support India’s gas supply initiative to help to reduce carbon emissions. The intention is to develop the LNG terminal as a gravity-based structure that sits on the seabed approximately 11 km offshore Kakinada, a solution designed to withstand the harsh weather conditions the Indian monsoon season presents.
It has also been announced that Crown is working with Wärtsilä and Aker Solutions to develop the new offshore LNG terminal in the Bay of Bengal. Aker Solutions has been appointed as the main contractor, while Wärtsilä Gas Solutions will conduct the front-end engineering and design (FEED) of the regasification system. It is estimated that the LNG terminal will be completed and fully operational approximately three years after the final investment decision has been made.
