The first two tugs out of a five-tug order placed with the Turkish shipyard Sanmar by Svitzer for operations in Oman have recently been delivered and started working in the Port of Sohar. The three remaining tugs are expected to be handed over soon.
Jacob Bac, Deputy Harbour Master at Port of Sohar, commented, “The Svitzer Liwa and Svitzer Barka bring a whole new level of towage to Sohar port. With their sharp handling and maneuverability along with their instant power and good looks, they certainly are a force to be reckoned with.”
Just over a year ago Sohar Industrial Port Company renewed the contract for Svitzer, the world’s leading tug operator, to provide marine services at Sohar in Oman. The new 15-year contract required a fleet development plan to provide further tugs that meet the port’s evolving needs and are built to the highest safety standards.
The order consists of five azimuth stern drive (ASD) tugs from the Sanmar portfolio, including three 80 tonnes bollard pull rated “Bigacay” class, RAstar 2900SX tugs and two 50 tonnes bollard pull “Sirapinar” class RAmparts 2200 tugs. Sanmar Vice President Ali Gurun added, “The Sohar boats represent a very good example of Sanmar’s customisation of an otherwise standard design. Two exceptionally successful Robert Allan Ltd. exclusive designs have been modified by our design and engineering teams in-house to suit Sohar’s challenging requirements within a very tight budget constraint.”
