Hutchison Ports Sohar has announced that its Terminal C facility has reached a significant milestone, handling its 3 millionth teu since operations began in 2014. A special ceremony was held at the terminal to mark the occasion.
At the same time, a contract was signed by the company to purchase two new remote-controlled super post-panamax quay cranes from Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co. The cranes will have an outreach of 24 rows of containers and will be capable of handling the largest vessels currently in operation. Following their delivery, Hutchison Ports Sohar will have a total of six remote-controlled super post-Panamax quay cranes and seven manually operated cranes out of a total of 13 ship-to-shore cranes.
In addition Hutchison Ports Sohar has confirmed it is buying eight new automated RTG cranes, which will be operated remotely from a centraloperations centre. It is expected that all of these new cranes will be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2019, taking terminal capacity to around 1.8 million teu a year.
Speaking at the ceremony to mark the 3million teu landmark, Anacin Kum, chief executive of Hutchison Ports Sohar, said he was confident that the investments would strengthen the port’s regional position. Furthermore additional investments were planned over the next few years that would also contribute to the growth of the shipping industry in the region generally and in Oman especially.
Hutchison Ports Sohar was formerly known as Oman International Container Terminal. It is a joint-venture between between Hutchison Ports, the Government of Oman, Steinweg of the Netherlands and a number of Omani investors.
