Colombo Dockyard recently celebrated the keel laying of two vessels, a 60m buoy tender and 50m twin hull catamaran type pilot station craft, for the General Company for Ports of Iraq (GCPI). Both contracts were secured through The Toyota Tsushima Corporation (TTC) of Japan.
TTC and GCPI signed the original contract for this important shipbuilding project in Dubai in April this year, with Colombo Dockyard being confirmed as the chosen shipyard in May. Since then, the development of the basic and detailed design engineering has taken place. Steel work has now commenced, and it is expected that both vessels will be delivered to GCPI in the third quarter of 2020.
The pilot station and buoy tender vessels will be constructed using modern technology and will be built to ClassNK standards. The pilot boat will be used to transport pilots and provisions, to provide pilots with accommodation and to provide station and other support services for pilot boats. This vessel, capable of a speed of 14 knots, will be fully air-conditioned and will be able to offer accommodation for up to 47 persons.
The buoy tender vessel is designed to retrieve and launch, repair and maintain and to transport marine navigation buoys. The new vessel will be capable of achieving a speed of 12 knots and is to be equipped with a crane with a lifting capacity of 22 tons. This vessel will also provide fully air-conditioned living quarters for its complement of 29 crew.
