Oman Drydock Company (ODC) is working on a major project to repair the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) tanker, Desh Vaibhav, which was badly damaged in an explosion while sailing to Fujairah in August this year. The repair contract for the VLCC, which will involve around 350 tons of steel work, is one of the biggest secured this year by the shipyard and reflects the renewed efforts of the newly installed management team at ODC to win new clients.
Other notable visitors to the yard in the past few weeks include Oman Shipping Company’s tanker, Manah; the Turkish bulk carrier, Ince Akdeniz, and the Eastern Mediterranean bulker, Parea, which was docked for bottom repairs. The yard’s close relationship with Greek shipowner, Springfield Shipping, has also continued with the docking of the Olympic Legend, while other successes in the Greek market have included general drydocking repairs for Prime Marine Management’s tanker Bowfin and Kyklades Maritime Corporation’s Milo.
ODC’s facility, which is located in Duqm, has two ULCC size graving docks, measuring 410m x 95m and 410m x 80m, and five quays, with a total of 2,800m of alongside berthage with water depths of between 9 and 10 metres. There are 14 jib cranes in place, with lifting capacities of between 40 and 100 tons, five workshops, and a cryogenics clean room for LNG tanker repair work.
Since ODC began operations back in 2011, the yard has carried out more than 570 repair and conversion projects. Recently the yard has also been carrying out both ballast water management system installation and scrubber retrofitting for its clients.
