Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) ceremonially launched its first ever Cable Laying Vessel, which is being built for Kokusai Cable Ship (KCS) of Japan, on 3rd September 2018. This is the biggest ever vessel, price-wise as well as length-wise, to be built by CDPLC in its history and is the first ship of its type to be constructed in Sri Lanka for Japanese clients.
The ceremonial launching of a vessel is the process of transferring the vessel to the water for the first time, breaking a ‘pot of milk’ over the ship’s bow area and inviting good luck to the vessel, the crew and the owners.
The ceremony was graced by Takaaki Anraku, President, and Yukihiro Fujii, Managing Director (Engineering & Facility Planning Department), at KCS, as well as other distinguished guests from Japan. Representing Colombo Dockyard was the yard’s chairman, Toru Takehara and managing director, D. V. Abeysinghe, as well as other senior members of the management team. Dr. Abdul Rahim, Regional Manager, South Asia,
ClassNK, also participated.
The new vessel is designed for the installation and repair of both optical and power cables, and features a cable carrying capacity of 5000 tonnes. It also incorporates low resistance hull lines designed to promote high speed and low fuel consumption operations. The environment-friendly cable layer has a diesel-electric propulsion system and will be capable of operating in emission control areas.
