The Centre of Excellence in Maritime & Shipbuilding (CEMS), a well-funded startup business, focusing on skills development in the maritime and shipbuilding sector, has announced the setting up of specialist laboratories in the Indian port cities of Mumbai and Vizag.
Promoted by Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass), in partnership with Siemens, and with support from the Indian Ministry of Shipping, CEMS aims to build up local competencies through the development of skills in the latest technologies for the shipbuilding and repair business, and ancillary sectors. CEMS has just announced the setting up of a total of 24 laboratories for this work, six in Mumbai and 18 in Vizag, and has also issued a list of courses being offered. These include: Product Design & Validation, Advanced Manufacturing, Hull Design, Automation, Welding Technology, Robotics, Virtual Reality, Advanced Machinery & Robotics and Electrical Systems, among others.
CEMS believes its industry-relevant skills development program will equip students with employable engineering and technical skills relating to ship design, shipbuilding, maintenance and overhaul work, as well as Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), and advanced digital manufacturing-factory concepts.
Arun Sharma, executive chairman, claims CEMS is establishing a training network that is unique in the Asia Pacific region. “With the setting up of these labs in Mumbai and Vizag, CEMS is well-positioned to build up competency in the maritime and shipbuilding sector through various courses ably supported by world class infrastructure,” he added.
