WISTA’s Sri Lanka Careers Day 2018 program, organised by Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association Sri Lanka (WISTA Sri Lanka), was recently held at the Port of Colombo.
One of WISTA – Sri Lanka’s prime objectives is to promote careers in shipping and shipping related industries amongst women in Sri Lanka to encourage a greater gender balance in the industry. In order to achieve this objective, WISTA has held a careers day for the past four years. This year’s event was aimed at students studying commerce at schools and educational institutions in Colombo, introducing shipping as a career to female school leavers.
Almost 100 students from nine girl’s schools in the Colombo area took part in the WISTA-run event, which was supported by the three container terminals operating in the Port of Colombo. Also involved was the Mahapola Training Institute and Sri Lanka Ports Authority. The students were taken on a tour of the port and given a number of presentations about aspects of the shipping and logistics business.
Catriona Jayasundera, executive committee member, says, “WISTA Sri Lanka is committed to, and will continue in, its quest to create an interest in young women to take active roles in the shipping industry. We will also seek find ways and means to contribute and influence the shipping industry.”
