H.E. Dr. Abdullah Belheif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Infrastructure Development, and Chairman of the Federal Authority for Land and Maritime Transport, recently attended the General Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London. During the meeting, the UAE officially submitted its application to become a member of the IMO Executive Council, as a Category B member. The Minister said: “The UAE has always proved to be one of the main pillars of the global maritime sector and has achieved unprecedented achievements in the marine port infrastructure industry.”
On the sidelines of the IMO meeting, Abdullah Al-Naimi met with Kitak Lim, Secretary General. They discussed the IMO’s keenness to be elected to the IMO Council at elections in November and December this year. Later, a detailed presentation about the nomination of the UAE to the membership of the Council was made in the presence of high-level delegations from around the world. The presentation stressed the contribution of the UAE in upgrading the international maritime system, its participation in IMO conventions and its role in supporting the marine sector locally, regionally and globally, as well as its long history in the maritime field and maritime industry.
A team has been set up to support the nomination of the UAE to the IMO Executive Council. This comprises representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Energy, the Ports and Free Zones Security Authority, the Federal Customs Authority, the Dubai Maritime City Authority, ADNOC, DP World, Abu Dhabi Ports Company, Sharjah Ports and Customs Department, Saqr Port Authority and Emirates Rating Authority.
