Oman Shipping Company (OSC), and its ship management and chartering subsidiaries, have been brought under the control of the Oman Global Logistics Group (OGL), a holding company set up by the government of Oman to deliver the Sultanate’s ambitious logistics strategy. OSC joins a number of public sector transportation operations within the holding company, including National Ferries Company, which owns and operates the country’s high-speed ferry coastal transportation service, and Oman National Transport Company (Mwasalat).
The stated objective of bringing transportation and logistics companies under one umbrella organisation is to make these companies more business-driven, so they do not have to rely on government subsidies for their operations in the longer term. Also now within the holding company are the country’s interests in key ports at Sohar, Duqm and Salalah, as well as Oman International Container Terminal (OICT), which operates a container terminal at Sohar Port; Freezone Sohar and Salalah Freezone; Oman Rail Company; Oman Drydock Company; and the Sohar based International Maritime College Oman (IMCO).
OGL was established earlier this year, to align the country’s port, free zone, railway, maritime and land transport sectors with the government’s broader strategy for developing a logistics-orientated economy.
